The Bethesda

During their sojourn in Nieu-Bethesda, our guests can savour rest, beauty, and inspiration, and in turn, we welcome even more guests who want to treasure authenticity and something quietly unforgettable.

Our Story

In February 2019, Ludolf and Carla Smit purchased a property with a dream of escaping the city and settling into the serenity of the platteland. Over the following months, they immersed themselves in auctions and markets, researched linens and amenities, planned gas and greywater systems, stocked up on coffee beans and tiles—and then made the move from Johannesburg to the quiet heart of the Karoo to bring their vision to life.

Today, their luxury guesthouse and pizzeria, The Bethesda, sits in the village of Nieu-Bethesda, near Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

After extensive renovations to the 4,000 m² property, Ludolf and Carla now spend their days harvesting fresh produce from their garden, making pizzas and beds, directing the flow of furrow water, hosting guests, and continually restoring and maintaining their ever-evolving sanctuary.

While they traded the rat race for village life, they soon discovered that life in the countryside is far from quiet. Nieu-Bethesda hums with creativity and community: bands passing through perform impromptu concerts on a stoep, while wine tastings, art exhibitions, mountain bike races, classical soirées, and stargazing evenings fill the village calendar. Weekly village walks, lively gatherings at the local Sports Club, church socials, and festivals like the beloved Pumpkin Festival and Garlic Festival ensure there’s always something happening. Life in the Karoo, it turns out, is wonderfully full.

Our Rooms

At The Bethesda, we offer luxury accommodation in tranquil surroundings. Nestle in the heart of Nieu-Bethesda on expansive grounds, guests are welcomed by a generous stoep overlooking a formal rose garden—a peaceful space.

Inside, natural wooden floors lead the way to spacious, thoughtfully appointed en-suite rooms. Large windows, high ceilings, and thick walls ensure a cool refuge in the heat of summer and a cosy haven during the crisp Karoo winters.

Each room is individually styled and opens onto a private outdoor seating area. Comfort and detail are paramount:

Whether you’re seeking peace, adventure, or inspiration, our dedicated team is ready to welcome you with true Karoo warmth and hospitality.

Bruno's at The Bethesda

Established by Bruno Reolon, the pizzeria reflects Bruno’s eccentric Italian Swiss touch.

Our Karoo pizzas are wood fired, thin based, are made with local produce and topped with fresh herbs and greens from our garden. Seating is provided inside the converted ‘waenhuis’ (barn) and outside on the patio.

Children are welcome and we offer child friendly facilities and seating.

Take away pizzas are available too.

The pizzeria is available as a function venue on request.

Celebrate in the Cellar

The unique, atmospheric underground cellar—designed and built by Bruno Reolon himself—is available as an intimate and exclusive function space, perfect for special celebrations.
